Durham and Cleveland

In North East, redistricting on October 1, 2011 by dadge

This area has an entitlement to twelve seats. Darlington borough can form one seat on its own, but the Cleveland boroughs aren’t “constituency size” so the seats will have to spill over between them. The decisions to make are which bits to combine, and I’ve decided as follows:

Redcar & Cleveland – Middlesbrough: a seat combining Eston with East and South Middlesbrough. This is different from the current arrangement and the Commission’s proposals. I don’t say my proposal here is better than the Commission’s, I just offer it as a possibility.

Middlesbrough – Stockton: a seat combining central Middlesbrough with Thornaby. This is the same as the Commission’s proposal, and it’s really the only option.

Stockton – County Durham: a seat combining Billingham with the Sedgefield and Yarm areas. I’ve done this to keep all of Stockton town in one seat.

Elsewhere in County Durham, my counter-proposal has seats that are similar to the current constituencies. This means that, unlike in the Commission’s proposals, Barnard Castle is not with Consett but still with Bishop Auckland.

The main differences from the current constituencies are:
– Newton Aycliffe from Sedgefield to Bishop Auckland. (There is a ward called Shildon East that contains part of Shildon and part of Newton Aycliffe; putting the two towns in the same constituency will avoid breaking local ties.)
– Spennymoor from Bishop Auckland to Durham. This isn’t my preferred option, but it’s difficult otherwise to keep the constituencies the regulation size.

Finally, Hartlepool. The Commission proposes to add a chunk of Billingham to make the numbers up; I prefer the option of adding the Blackhalls ward.

On the map, my proposed seats are shown by the colour shading. The red lines are the current (2010) constituencies. The Commission’s proposals are here. (pdf)

  1. Fairly reasonable ideas on the whole except in the Stockton area. I don’t think putting all of Stockton in one seat is a good idea because of the knock-on effects it produces, specifically your Billingham and Sedgefield seat including Yarm. Yarm has no connection with anywhere beyond Stockton, so I would prefer continuing to split Stockton-on-Tees to better reflect the community links between Stockton and its satellite towns.

I would also change a couple of names: I would drop the Eston from your Middlesbrough East seat and rename your Redcar seat as Redcar and Cleveland.

    • My proposal can be modified quite easily by putting Yarm and Eaglescliffe into Stockton and in exchange putting the three Norton wards into the Billingham seat.
