North East London

In London, redistricting on October 6, 2011 by dadge

In this counter-proposal I’ve addressed some of the problems with the Commission’s proposals:

1. The cross-Lea seat: instead of joining Chingford and Edmonton I’ve joined Stratford and Bow, an area which will have a community of interest in the aftermath of the Olympics.

2. Waltham Forest is not combined with parts of any other borough.

3. Hornsey and Wood Green is restored to its current boundaries.

I couldn’t resolve some problems:

1. Split Ilford: Two wards are needed from somewhere to bolster the Barking seat, and it’s hard to see any alternative than taking those two wards from Ilford. There’s a bit more hope for de-coupling Ilford from East Ham, but the knock-on effects would include putting half of Woodford in the Chingford seat.

I have tried to improve arrangements in Ilford a bit by putting the core of Ilford north of the railway in one seat, and the Fairlop-Hainault fringe in Wanstead and Woodford.

2. Split Romford: I don’t think there’s any way to remove West Romford from the Dagenham seat – if you try, you get a Romford seat with an electorate of 80,548, which would be against the law to the tune of 75 voters.

  1. Putting Canning Town South in a different constituency to Custom House and Royal Docks doesn’t work. It’s ludicrous to have Royal Docks in a different constituency as it is at present but to go further and split CH and CTS doesn’t work at all.

For Newham, the proposed boundaries make quite a lot of sense and the Olympics is only for 2 weeks 3 years prior to the boundary changes and I doubt there will be a strong community spirit united the area due to where the new developments are on the ground as opposed to on a map.

If the knock-on effect of changes in Chingford and Edmonton are the problem and consequently you had to stick Royal Docks, Canning Town South and Custom House with another area outside of Newham it would make perfect sense to go with the Tower Hamlets wards on the Isle of Dogs to ceate a “London Docklands” seat – it may look odd on the map but the transport links give it a very strong connection, it would make perfect sense to residents and businesses and everyone in the area would relate to it.

    • Drat – I hoped no-one would notice the Canning Town/Custom House problem. 🙂 You’re probably right that a Docklands seat would be a better (and more popular) idea.

  2. You couldn’t be more wrong over a Docklands seat. The Tower Hamlets Tories will fight tooth and nail to avoid going back in with Canning Town or Beckton. Despite the DLR line there is absolutely no community of interest between the two parts and the Lea is the separation. The Lea is a lot more indistinct towards Bow, where there is the District line, the Central line, the A13, and where the Bow Road is being labelled “the Olympic High Street”.

PS I have resolved your issue in Romford which you said might not be possible:
Hornchurch & Upminster – leave it as it was at the 2010 election (79568)
Romford – leave it as it was in 2010, plus Chadwell Heath (78695)
Dagenham & Rainham – leave it as it was in 2010, take out Chadwell Heath (to Romford), plus Alibon, Parsloes (76369)
Barking – leave it as it was in 2010, less Alibon, Parsloes (to D&R), plus Goodmayes, Mayfield (79507)
