Bradford, Calderdale & Kirklees

In redistricting, West Yorkshire, Yorks/Humber on October 17, 2011 by dadge

The theoretical entitlements of these three boroughs are as follows:

Bradford 4.31
Calderdale 1.89
Kirklees 3.97
Total 10.17

So, together they are entitled to 10 seats. In theory Kirklees could be reviewed on its own, but in practice that’s difficult because it has 23 wards to be divided between 4 seats, and also because Bradford and Calderdale have a combined entitlement to 6 and one fifth seats, and it’s hard to find somewhere to put those extra 15,000 voters. In my plan those voters become part of a Spenborough seat.

Reviewing the three boroughs as one area helps to undo some of the problems with the Commission’s proposals. They plan to split Bingley, Shipley, Idle, Dewsbury and Batley. What’s worse, they plan to put half of Idle and half of Batley into Leeds constituencies. Worst of all(?) they plan an East Dewsbury and West Wakefield seat.

The three options below are similar, the main differences being:

Option 1: the Colne Valley ward in the Calder Valley seat (Requires a split ward)
Option 2: the Worth Valley ward in the Calder Valley seat
Option 3: Queensbury in the Halifax seat

  1. If I recall correctly there is no road between Calderdale and Colne Valley ward, so adding Worth Valley would probably be a better idea.

    • There’s the B6114. I think the Colne Valley ward is actually a better fit, geographically, with the Calder Valley, but it would obviously be a shame to lose Colne Valley as the name of a constituency.

  2. The road connections between the Calder and Colne Valleys are very poor and there is no existing sense of community between the Huddersfield-centric Colne Valley and the Halifax or Tormorden-centric Calder Valley. It is a bad combination.

My preference is to retain the existing metropolitan district boundaries wherever possible. This can be done easily in Kirklees as it corresponds to almost exactly 4 constituencies. If there is one split ward between Huddersfield and Colne Valley all 4 constituencies are within the Boundary Commission limits of 76,641+/-5%. The existing constituencies in North Kirklees are retained as now, leaving existing communities intact. in Kirklees the Labour Group wishes Lindley ward to be split between Huddersfield and Colne Valley. There are at least 6 ways to do that.

    • I didn’t want to push my luck on the split-ward front, since what you suggest would also require a split ward in Bradford, but you are of course correct, and it would avoid Wyke being an orphan ward.
