As the party conferences come to an end, politicians will (hopefully) go back to work (although there are those, of course, who think the country would run itself better if they all stayed in bed), but most of them will have one eye on the forthcoming general election. It’s a quirk of the British system that we don’t know when exactly it’s going to be, but we do know it’s going to be before next summer.

From 2001-2005 I spent a lot of my spare time investigating the British system of democracy, and now seems like a good time to have another look, especially in the light of the expenses scandal.
